The original commercially-inclined 130 was designed to carry two rows of passengers and large amounts cargo, but the new model is unashamedly geared towards families. That’s because Land Rover has managed to squeeze in eight whole seats – rather than the apologetic two rearmost chairs in the seven-seater 110 – arranged in a 2-3-3 formation.
Other provisions for these occupants include padded armrests, integrated storage compartments, USB-C ports and additional air vents. The 130 also the only Defender to be offered with a four-zone automatic climate control option, along with the ability to fit up to five ISOFIX child safety seats – two on each of the outermost second and third rows as well as one on the front passenger seat.
Inside, the chunky dashboard has been outfitted with the latest 11.4-inch curved touchscreen as standard – linked to the usual Pivi Pro infotainment system – that was first seen in the, now incorporating the what3words system for navigation address input. New interior options include Noble Chrome air vent controls, Ceres Silver speaker grilles and Atlas centre armrest hinges, along with Natural Light Oak “engineered” wood veneer.
Power, seating capacity and copious technology is one thing, but every Defender has to prove its mettle off the road. To that end, all 130 models come with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, Intelligent All-Wheel Drive and electronic air suspension with adaptive dampers. The latter allows up to 430 mm of articulation by lifting the car by 71.5 mm at the front and 73.5 mm at the rear.
The First Edition builds on the HSE’s standard equipment, coming with matrix LED headlights, heated second- and third-row seats, four-zone climate control, a Meridian sound system, a Driver Assist Pack and privacy glass. Pricing starts at £73,895 in the United Kingdom, where Queen Elizabeth II has been given a specially-configured Defender 130 for use by the British Red Cross, as part of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
