It’s easy to treat an off-roadish Lamborghini Huracan as proof that at least one shark has been jumped. This is pretty much the same accusation that many levelled at the when it was launched last year. The case of a supercar deliberately compromised to do something silly it is unlikely to ever be called on to do is easily critiqued.
While the idea was well received after being shown in 2019, it wasn’t confirmed for production. It took the return of Stefan Winkelmann for his second stint as Lambo’s CEO to shine the green light – he liked the idea so much he said yes on his second day back in the job. That led to the original plan to build a limited run of 900 cars, but with huge demand seeing this number bumped upwards – there will now be 1,499.
Climbing into the cockpit reveals that the new air intake has brought another issue, a glance at the rearview mirror revealing nothing more than the plumbing’s internal ducting. The mirror itself still needs to be fitted for homologation reasons.
Despite having less grip to call on the Sterrato keeps the combination of a keen front end, proportional responses and a good amount of feedback – the aloof steering of the early Huracan is a distant memory. Lacking active rear steering denies the savage turn-in of the STO or Tecnica, but it also makes it feel stable. The Sterrato’s chassis is obviously softer and there is more body roll on the raised suspension, the springs being 25 per cent less stiff than the regular car.
