Two perfectly matched sports cars deliver in entirely different ways, leading to our toughest decision in years.

More than 80 hours of uninterrupted rain were making us stir crazy. Sure, for some of you reading this elsewhere, that's no big deal, but we pay the weather tax here in California for a reason. And rain on a weekend? Insult to injury.

The copy-paste thing isn't an exaggeration. Both cars hit 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and ran an 11.8-second quarter mile. At the finish line, the BMW is traveling slightly faster at 120.2 mph to the Porsche's 119.0. Any drag race is going to come down to driver reaction times. If you thought all that extra weight between the BMW's wheels would have a detrimental effect on braking, though, you'd be wrong. Both cars stop from 60 mph in 100 feet, though the BMW uses physically larger brakes to do it.Surely, though, it must show up in our handling tests. Not really! The Cayman pulls slightly higher average lateral g on the skidpad, 1.06 to the M2's 1.04, but the slight advantage doesn't translate to our racetrack-in-a-bottle figure-eight test.

Once you've figured out how to brush the pedal rather than step on it, the M2 becomes addictive. The power delivery feels as immediate as an EV's, as if the engine is always making peak horsepower and torque no matter the rpm. Doesn't matter if you're well above or below the posted speed limit, any time you prod the gas pedal the car tries to leap out from under you.The brakes and steering require just as much delicacy.

The Cayman does the opposite, more a controlled demolition instead of a wrecking ball. Everything feels more relaxed and deliberate, more sophisticated and finessed. If the M2 is The Hulk smashing its way through everything, the Cayman is Superman watching everything in slow-motion and easily sidestepping every hazard. They're both effectively invincible, but they go about the hero business completely differently.

It's so competent and forgiving, in fact, you get no easy rewards. Driving the same speed in the Cayman as the M2 doesn't feel nearly as quick, nor does it require nearly as much focus. To get the same thrills from the Porsche, you have to drive the car considerably faster and harder. The M2 gives out free hits all day to keep you hooked, but the Cayman makes you pay up front every time.
