The holiday event is happening against the backdrop of increased incidents of anti-Semitism

The parade is part of the annual lighting of a menorah at City Hall, a tradition in Houston that is 27 years old. Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple during the Maccabee Revolt when Seleucids tried to force the Jewish people to abandon their culture. The menorah represents sacred oils that miraculously burned for eight days, keep the temple consecrated.
The parade will begin at Chabad Outreach on Fondren at 4 p.m. and make its way to City Hall for the lighting ceremony. This will include special remarks from guests and an appearance by a light up dancing robot. Party buses will have programs and snacks for children, and the whole parade will be flanked by first responder vehicles. Honoring the sacrifices of first responders is the theme of this year’s parade.
