The film stars Piper Perabo, an aspiring singer-songwriter in New York City who ends up working at a rowdy bar full of badass bar staff. Their dancing-on-the-bar sequences are iconic. At the time of shooting, Marlene Stewart, the film’s costume designer, had been working with artists such as Madonna, Cher, and Janet Jackson. As a result, she was well versed in finding outfits made for dancing. “My years of working on tours, especially with Madonna, [included] doing clothes that you can move in,” she says. “It’s action clothes.
Stewart’s main challenge as a costume designer was differentiating the characters within the context of a uniform. “When you do an ensemble piece, it’s really about finding a way to create individual characters,” she says. “You have to tell a story in a movie, so what’s important is finding ways to have the visuals and the clothes reflect any developments in their storyline.” Another consideration was practicality: Dancing on slippery bars, for instance, requires seriously sturdy shoes.
Stewart had fun with the supporting cast as well. Bello, who runs Coyote Ugly in the film, was given a more androgynous look that nods to the real-life bar’s history. “The original bar did have a biker vibe to it, so I went there with her,” Stewart says. “It’s a little tougher and edgier.” Dressing Banks in an “updated hippie vibe” was also one of Stewart’s favorite moments.
