Biomica plans to use the $20 million in new funding from Shanghai Healthcare Capital to further develop its pipeline of microbiome-based therapeutics.

Biomica’s other projects also moved forward this year, notably the collaboration agreement with the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv, Israel. Biomica and Sheba’s Microbiome Innovation Center, headed by Dr. Yael Haberman, plan to conduct deep sequencing and high-resolution microbiome analysis of samples obtained from patients with inflammatory bowel disease .

The progress Biomica made in 2022 has attracted global attention and new funding. Shanghai Healthcare Capital is a leading Chinese private equity fund, based in Shanghai and focused on biotech and healthcare investments globally. The fund’s goal is investment in early stage and best-in-class innovators with a pipeline of therapies for improving the lives and long-term outcome of patients.

Analyzing a dataset of Chinese investments in Israel between 2002 and 2020, compiled by Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies ,found that the majority of the investments were made by venture capital firms and that there has been a noticeable increase, since 2014, in funds directed at Israeli life science firms.

Dr. Jing Bao, Senior Advisor of Shanghai HealthCare Capital , said in a statement: “Microbiome research is an attractive field for SHC. It could potentially benefit a very large Chinese population… Specifically, Shanghai Pharma plays a strong role in China’s LBP [Live Biotherapeutic Product] industry. Biomica, together with Evogene, has deep knowledge in the field and is pushing its first asset into the clinical stage.
