Louisiana students amazed the math community by proving the Pythagorean theorem using trigonometry, a feat considered impossible for 2,000 years.

Ne’Kiya Jackson and Calcea Johnson from Louisiana blew the math community away when they presented a solution to the Pythagorean theorem using trigonometry, an impossible feat for 2,000 years. Now a freshman at LSU, Calcea Johnson shared in a news release that their journey began with a math contest at their high school in 2022.

They have now officially published their groundbreaking proofs of the Pythagorean theorem using trigonometry, a task previously thought to be technically implausible since it challenges the foundational principles of the field. Although she did not expect anyone to solve it given that the theorem had remained unchanged for 2,000 years. Nevertheless, motivated by a $500 reward, two high school students set to work

Impressed by their remarkable achievement, their high school encouraged them to present their proof on a larger platform. The two students were taken by surprise when their work was showcased at the American Mathematical Society meeting in 2023. Their proof garnered significant attention, even receiving a shout-out from former First Lady Michelle Obama.but also the significance of their identities as two high school students and African-American women.
