Two gang members who murdered a 14-year-old Riverside boy in 2012 will serve the rest of their lives in prison, a judge ruled on Friday, March 24.
Manuel Silverio Barbarin Jr., 32, and Cristian Velasquez Rosales, 31, were convicted on Nov. 17 of first-degree murder, being felons in possession of a firearm and participating in a criminal street gang. Then on Dec. 20, a jury that could have recommended the death penalty instead chose life without parole.
Superior Court Judge Bernard J. Schwartz confirmed the jury’s recommendation on Friday during a hearing at the Riverside County Hall of Justice in Riverside, court records show. On Feb. 23, 2012, Lareanz Simmons, a Poly High freshman, was walking to the home on Georgia Street where he lived with his grandmother when he was gunned down. Prosecutors said Rosales drove the car that crept up on Simmons, and Barbarin got out and shot Simmons several times.Riverside police testified that Simmons, who was Black, was a victim of decades of violence between Hispanic and Black gangs in Riverside that had evolved from targeted hits to random retribution shootings.
Detectives quickly identified Barbarin and Rosales as suspects, but they lacked evidence until Barbarin was arrested in an unrelated case and
