The dogs appeared to have been abused, authorities said.

Two Little Egg Harbor residents were facing criminal charges after dead dogs were found Saturday in a crate inside a shed on their property, police said.

Officers were called to Tavistock Drive home shortly after 9 a.m. after neighbors complained of a foul odor emanating from the shed in the rear of the property. They made a gruesome discovery — a pair of 1-year-old pups, according to a release from the Little Egg Harbor Police Department. It was unclear if the dogs were left in the crate alive or placed in there after they died, but police said they were found “under conditions that indicated cruelty or abuse to the dogs.”

A warrant was issued for the arrest of Jarriel S. Walton, 29, and Justina T Erving, 28, and they were both charged with two counts of cruel abuse of a living animal and one count of failure to provide proper shelter,Erving was located and arrested, and then taken to the Ocean County Jail where she was being held pending future court proceedings. Attempts to take Walton into custody were unsuccessful as of Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
