For the uninitiated, paczki is a Polish donut filled with jelly, custard or cream and covered in powdered sugar or glazed. Back in the day, the idea was to use up all the ingredients in the cupboard that were forbidden during Lent, such as cream, lard and sugar, before the fasting season began. Immigrants brought over the tradition with them when they settled in midwest cities like Cleveland.
Paczki are so decadent, they’re generally available only on Fat Tuesday. Some spots, though, sell them earlier or even year-round. You can likely find them at your favorite local bakery, donut shop or grocery store. This biggest Paczki Day party of the year starts at 5 a.m. at this 74-year-old Eastern European bakery. Choose from over 30 flavors including this year’s special flavor, the Porco Hurricane Paczki.
