The PG-13 rating makes the most financial sense for a big-budget action film, but some stories call for the mature elements of an R-rating.
Hollywood’s instinct is to release every blockbuster film under the PG-13 umbrella, but some films would have benefited from R-rated elements. Generally, studios favor the PG-13 rating as it allows more people to see the film in theaters. The higher a film’s budget, the more likely a studio will hope to recoup its spending with a more permissive rating. PG-13 is generally the sweet spot for blockbusters, which are often action films depicting at least a modest amount of bloodshed and violence.
9 Venom The 2018 solo Venom film follows journalist Eddie Brock, who gains superpowers after finding himself bound to a flesh-eating alien symbiote, the titular Venom. Venom is one of Marvel comics’ most violent and abject antiheroes, one whose predilection for murder and eating brains is supposed to unsettle the viewer. The character loses much of his distinctive appeal by watering down the violence into a PG-13-rated Venom movie, making Venom another generic, monstrous antihero.
6 Scary Movie 3 The third film in the Scary Movie parody franchise saw the original writers and director step away from the project and the R-rating giving way to PG-13. The Scary Movie films are unapologetically juvenile, so changing the rating to welcome more immature viewers to movie theaters makes sense. However, many of the most memorable gags in the first two films rely on raunchy humor and foul language.
