DC Comics has published some of the best comic storylines of all time, but there are some great stories DC Studios cannot use for the new DC Universe.
Despite having published some of the best superhero storylines of all time, there are some DC Comics that cannot be adapted for the new DC Universe. In some cases this is due to there being some stories that just wouldn't work in a film aimed at general audiences. In others, the comics have already been mined for other adaptations and might seem derivative in live action.
9 Why The DCU Can't Use The Red Son Comic Storyline Originally published across three volumes in 2003, Superman: Red Son presented a world where Superman was raised in the Soviet Union. Raised on a Ukrainian farm, this Kal-El fought a never-ending battle for "Stalin, socialism, and the international expansion of the Warsaw Pact.
With a storyline involving sexual assault and brainwashing, it would be impossible for the story of Identity Crisis to be told in a movie that was also accessible to family audiences. The dark elements are integral to the storyline's central mystery and there is no way to remove them without completely changing it into an entirely different tale.
While Knightfall is still considered to be one of the best Batman stories ever written, it has also already been adapted. Many of the most famous scenes from Knightfall, including the moment where Bane "broke the Bat," were prominently featured in The Dark Knight Rises. While it has been a decade since Christopher Nolan concluded his trilogy of Batman movies, they are still popular enough to make any adaptation of Knightfall seem derivative by comparison.
4 Why The DCU Can't Use The Watchmen Storyline Written by Alan Moore with art by Dave Gibbons, Watchmen is perhaps the most famous deconstruction of superheroes ever written. Famously adapted into a movie by Zack Snyder in 2009, Watchmen also inspired a critically acclaimed 2019 television series. Given that legacy, and the controversy over the changes made from the books for the adaptations, it seems highly unlikely DC Studios would try to adapt Watchmen again so soon.
With the upcoming Superman: Legacy confirmed to be centered upon a young Superman, it would be impossible for the new Superman to be used in a Kingdom Come adaptation anytime soon. There is also a thematic issue, as Kingdom Come was written as a rebuttal to the right-makes-might ethos of the Dark Age of American Comics during which it was published.
