A massive development initiative on Great Nicobar Island, part of India's Andaman Islands, raises questions about the impact on Indigenous groups and the environment.
On a remote island in the Andaman Sea, bulldozers are tearing into pristine forests inhabited by one of the most isolated Indigenous groups, the Nicobarese and Shompen.
This ambitious mega-development project aims to create a US$9 billion megaport for India, with plans for both civilian and military infrastructure. Despite the promises to protect the environment and Indigenous groups, critics argue that the project poses a threat to their survival, comparing it to 'genocide in the name of mega-development.
' Meanwhile, the construction of a container port and airport at Galathea Bay and Campbell Bay should be completed within three years, making it one of India's three largest ports. The megaport forms part of a larger plan for the Andaman Islands, expanding existing naval and air facilities across the archipelago
